Amelia Island is home to Fernandina Beach. Being the only town on the Island, it is naturally the center of all activity. The southern portion of the island is home to the exclusive resorts of Amelia Island Plantation and the luxurious Ritz Carlton Hotel.

One of the claims to fame of Amelia Island is the fact that it is the only city in the U.S. to have served under eight flags. From the days of the first settlers in America and of pirates plundering the shipping lanes immediately off the coast, Amelia Island has remained a jewel in the rough.  Beautiful beyond all description, it is yet unknown to most of the world.

Amelia Island proudly claims the distinction of being the birth place of the modern shrimping industry. Although not nearly as prominent today as in the past, due to foreign imported shrimp, a sizable fleet still works the waters off the Georgia and Florida coasts. The fleet still makes its home the docks in downtown Fernandina Beach.

It is said that “some things never change.” Let’s hope this beautiful area is one of them.
