Historical Walk Through Amelia Island History

HISTORICAL WALK THROUGH AMELAI ISLAND HISTORY

.

The history of Amelia Island traces its history back to 1562 when the French first visited the Island under the command of Jean Ribault he named it Isle de Mai. The French control was short lived. In 1565 under the direction of Pedro Menendez the Spanish defeated the French and began a near 200 year domination. It was not until 1702, as the English presence began to dominate the area, that the name was once again changed to Amelia after the daughter of King George II. After retaking Amelia from the English in 1783, the Spanish began construction of Fort San Carlos in 1816 on the bluffs which now are known as Old Towne.

A historical marker presently marks the spot. Old Town today consist of an area of 15 – 20 blocks (depending on how you count) of pure history. It is not hard to understand why this particular spot was chosen as the early outpost. A clear view of the harbor entrance is evident.

Today, this Amelia Island real estate is being preserved and is a symbol of the past.  Rigid regulations are in place to guarantee preservation. Should you desire to purchase a portion of this Fernandina Beach real estate one should be diligent is researching restrictions.
